Golf Holidays in France - Ticked Off With the Algarve and Spain? Tee Off in France Instead

Comments (0)

Whether you are a regular player of the game of golf or just getting started in the sport, you may have noticed how crowded the courses are becoming in Spain and Portugal's Algarve. Well fear not, there is an alternative golfing holiday destination that is closer, more convenient, quieter and extremely high quality - the South West of France.

France, the land of fine wines, haute cuisine and high fashion has over the last twenty years, taken the game of golf to its heart. Having once considered the sport elitist, its popularity has grown to such an extent, that the enthusiastic golfer now has in excess of 650 golf courses to choose from. These feature some of the most beautiful countryside to be found anywhere in Europe.

France has more choice of fairway and green to offer than is available, throughout the rest of the European continent too and the quality doesn't diminish with quantity: 25 of France's courses are rated amongst the top 100 in Europe.

Over four times larger than England, France offers a varied climate from North to South and East to West. The climate turns from typically southern English, in Calais North France, to distinctly Mediterranean in Languedoc Roussillon, in the south. In the southwest of France, around the area of Poitou-Charentes, the climate cools, just enough to make an 18 hole stroll with a bag of sticks, one of the most memorable and pleasurable of all holiday pastimes.

Golf in Poitou-Charentes, France, is also comparatively inexpensive with 18 hole green fees costing between thirty and forty Euros, depending upon the time of year. You can relax, safe in the knowledge that at least until the golfing aficionados arrive, from the other overbooked destinations in Europe, you will be able to enjoy a relatively peaceful and uninterrupted game.

So, what of the facilities? Having to compete with its near neighbours of Spain and Portugal, the French authorities have been at pains to ensure the creation of golf courses and facilities that are second to none. Within striking distance of Poitou-Charentes itself, you will find some 22 courses, most notable among which are the courses at Chateau des Forges, Haut-Poitou and Golf du Cognac.

27 holes wait to greet you at Chateau des Forges. Made up of an 18 or 3 separate 9-hole courses, this challenging, yet undeniably relaxing course covers some 110 hectares of beautiful, unspoiled French countryside. If having played the 18, you're still up for more, why not take on another 9 before retiring to the clubhouse for a well-earned half litre or two. A 10 round pass is available mid to high season with special rates for couples.

Haut-Poitou challenges with a long par 73. Here a tough, wooded back nine follows an outward battle with numerous water hazards. At Golf du Cognac, nestled on the banks of the Charente, between Cognac and Jarnac, the course gently-slopes between vineyard and woodland, with three water hazards. Even experienced golfers may need a Cognac or two after the 12th, 15th and 17th holes here but they can rest assured, there'll be one waiting for them at the 19th.

Poitou Charentes Rentals specialise in golf villas in South West France. We offer for rent high quality holiday accommodation in the grounds of the Chateau des Forges golf club. You will also find on our site other French holiday gites in the Poitou Charentes, South West France area.

The 4 Best Golf Courses in Mauritius

Comments (0)

Want to keep your golf game up to scratch on your Mauritius holidays? Here are four of the courses you simply must play.

Mauritius is one of the premier luxury holiday destinations, and it is now also making a name for itself as an unforgettable place to go on a golf holiday. The first course on the island opened in 1994, so the golfing scene here is still young, but plenty of other top quality courses have sprung up over the past decade, giving avid golfers on Mauritius holidays numerous options when it comes to picking a course. Many of the courses are attached to five star hotels that offer free and discounted green fees to their residents, so bear that in mind when choosing your accommodation on the island.

If you are keen to play a few rounds of golf during your visit to Mauritius, here are four courses that you shouldn't miss out on...

One & Only Le Touessrok Golf Club

This is a tough course that is recommended for more experienced players, but if you've got a low enough handicap to take it on, you'll be well rewarded. Designed by Bernard Langer around nine lakes, to stay out of the water you'll have to play the game of your life, or just bring plenty of spare balls! But golfers looking for a challenge on their Mauritius holidays should accept no substitute - One & Only Le Touessrok is a must play.

Anahita Golf Course

For sheer beauty, there are few courses in the world that can match the Anahita. Designed by Ernie Els, this course only opened in the last few years but has already established itself as one of the best on the island. The scenery as you follow the coast is breathtaking, and the finish at the last hole is simply "to die for".

Heritage Golf & Spa Resort

Attached to this excellent five star hotel is a delightful championship quality golf course that is one of the best on the island. With a combined backdrop of mountain and sea, you'll have a hard time concentrating on the game at hand, but this expansive course deserves your attention and is a joy to play.

Belle Mare Plage Golf Club - The Legend

The very first (and, some would say, the very best) of the golf courses in Mauritius, The Legend more than lives up to its name. Host to the prestigious Mauritius Open, this superbly designed course includes forests, lakes and volanic rock in the landscape, and it is a treat for both top class golfers and keen amateurs on their Mauritius holidays. Belle Plage is also home to two more courses, The Links and Lemuria - both well worth playing.

Golfing Holidays in Spain - The Magic of Spain Golf Holidays

Comments (0)

Golfing holidays in Spain - the very phrase evokes a delightful image of long green fairways under a warm sun. Golf may have been invented in cold, misty Scotland but it's best enjoyed under sunny blue skies. And where better than in Spain? Not only does Spain promise year-round sunshine, it's also home to some of the country's - indeed Europe's - best golf courses.

So where are the best golf courses to be found? The fact is you can find golf courses all over Spain. Many are in the tourist haunts of the Costa del Sol and the Algarve. Like so many places on the tourist trail, they tend to be crowded, poor value and lacking in the charm you'll find in other parts of the country.

If you want to play golf in a real Spanish setting far from the crowds, head for the Costa Almeria in eastern Andalucía. This is one of Spain's best kept golfing secrets and it's clear to see why.

For one thing, it's in the country's driest province. Andalusia is graced with over 3000 hours of sunshine a year. That means you're guaranteed a game of golf in the dry pretty much anytime.

Another factor in choosing this part of the country is that life in the Costa Almeria moves to a more relaxed rhythm that the frenetic holiday towns of the Costa del Sol or the Algarve. It's less crowded and prices are reasonable not being geared towards tourists. Almeria is as beautiful as any part of Spain and offers its own charm reflected in the ancient villages and long gorgeous coastline.

Best of all for the golfer, Almeria has some of the most distinguished golf courses in Spain. Extensive golf course development has been carried out in recent years and many more courses are planned for the future. Currently, Almeria is home to nine quality golf courses. They are La Envía Golf & Spa Resort, Playa Serena, Alboran and Golf Almerimar in the south, and Aguilon, Desert Springs, Marina Golf, Macenas Golf & Beach Resort and Valle del Este in the north. Each has its own unique characteristics. For example, Desert Springs is Europe's only Arizona desert style golf course and the spa resort of La Envia is a veritable oasis.

All of Almeria's golf courses are convenient for resorts and the whole area is served by Almeria International Airport. It's less than an hour's drive away and offers regular, scheduled and budget flights from most UK airports.

When playing golf in Costa Almeria, you are participating in the relaxed Spanish lifestyle. Plus, you have the pleasure of being in an area of great natural beauty. You can tee off to dramatic vistas of shore and coastline. And they don't stand on ceremony here. You can play all year round dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. The infrastructure's there, too, in the form of shops, bars, hotels, cafes, restaurants and all the other facilities you could need.

Of course, golf is not all the region has to offer. After your 18 holes, you can head off to a tapas bar and feast on local snacks washed down with the local tipple. Later you can head off to a music bar or disco. You can also sample a rich and ancient culture in the art galleries and museums. In short, you've got the recipe for perfect golf holidays in Spain with the Costa Almeria being the perfect year round golf holiday destination.

So whether you're on holidays in Spain or whether you've decided to acquire your own Spain property, golfing in Spain is one of the country's great pleasures. The next time you're looking for a golf holiday in the sun, forget the overrun golfing regions of the Costa del Sol. Instead look into spending your next golf holiday in Almeria.

If you fall under the spell of Spain, you'll be happy to find that great property deals are another of the country's charms. Spain propery comes in all types and price ranges. For example, you'll find quality resorts near all the golf courses and investing in a home here will allow you to live in this golfing haven whenever you please.
